Quartet performing Aug. 25 at Theaterfest at the Fox

Concert dates announced for 40th anniversary season

The Spokane String Quartet is celebrating its 40th anniversary season in 2019-20, opening Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Spokane Falls Community College Music Building. Look for the season brochure in the mail later this month. Other concerts in the subscription series are Nov. 10 at the SFCC Music Building, Feb. 16 at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, April 5 at the Bing Crosby Theater and May 31 at the Bing Crosby Theater.

Trumpet player Eric Moe joins String Quartet for season finale

Spokane Symphony trumpet player Eric Moe joins the Spokane String Quartet for its season finale concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Bing Crosby Theater.

Musical Mendelssohns highlight March 17 concert at the Bing

The Spokane String Quartet will present music by the Mendelssohn siblings and Bela Bartok at a 3 p.m. concert Sunday, March 17, at the Bing Crosby Theater.

Fanny Mendelssohn and her brother Felix were both prodigies as composers. Although Felix was the better known, some thought Fanny was the more talented, but being a female composer her opportunities were more limited. Also on the program is a quartet by Bela Bartok, 20th century composer and chronicler of Hungarian folk music..

The program includes:

• Fanny Mendelssohn: String Quartet in E-Flat Major
• Bela Bartok: String Quartet No. 5
• Felix Mendelssohn: String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 13

SSQ, Gonzaga Chamber Chorus combine for Nov. 11 concert

The Spokane String Quartet, the Gonzaga University Chamber Chorus and the Cathedral Kantorei Soloists, under the direction of Timothy Westerhaus, present a special collaborative concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Spokane’s South Hill.

Entitled “The Ecstasies Above,” after the a work by contemporary composer Tarik O’Regan, the concert features that piece in addition to “The Hidden Treasure” by John Tavener, “The Hope of Loving” by Jake Runestad and “Fratres” by Arvo Part.

All seats at the Cathedral, located at 127 E. 12th Ave. at Grand Boulevard, are general admission. Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors, $12 for students, and free for Gonzaga faculty, staff and students with Gonzaga ID.

SSQ season opens Sunday at the Fox with Haydn, Shaw, Dvorak

The Spokane String Quartet launches its 2018-19 season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. The program includes works by Haydn and Dvorak, as well as Entr’acte by 36-year-old composer Caroline Shaw, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013. Quartet members are Mateusz Wolski, violin; Jeannette Wee-Yang, viola; Amanda Howard Phillips, violin; and Helen Byrne, cello. SSQ announces 2018-19 concert schedule

The Spokane String Quartet’s 2018-19 subscription series schedules will feature two concerts at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, two at the Bing Crosby Theater and one at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Watch for your season brochure in the mail in late July. Season tickets are now on sale and will be mailed in September. Individual-concert tickets go on sale in September.
